History of IAIN Bone

The long journey from Universitas Islam Raya Bone to the State Islamic Institute of Bone.

Brief History

The State Islamic Institute of Bone (IAIN Bone) has its own historical journey, beginning with the establishment of Universitas Islam Raya Bone in 1964. In 1967, its status changed to a State Higher Education Institution with the Faculty of Sharia of the State Islamic Institute (IAIN) Alauddin Makassar in Watampone serving as an affiliate class of the Faculty of Sharia of IAIN Alauddin Makassar, based on the Decree of the Rector of IAIN Ujung Pandang Number 14 of 1967 dated July 14, 1967. A year later, in 1968, it became the Branch Faculty of Sharia of IAIN Alauddin Makassar based on the Decree of the Minister of Religious Affairs of the Republic of Indonesia Number 166 of 1968, specifically offering the Sarjana Muda (Undergraduate Intermediate Degree) program.

Based on the Decree of the Minister of Religious Affairs of the Republic of Indonesia Number 56 of 1982, its status changed from the Branch Faculty of IAIN Alauddin Makassar to the Intermediate Faculty Branch of Alauddin Makassar, specifically offering Bachelor’s Degree programs. In accordance with political developments and the governmental system, in 1997 the Branch Faculty of Sharia of IAIN Alauddin Ujung Pandang was institutionally transformed into the State Islamic College (STAIN) Watampone based on Presidential Decree Number 11 of 1997 dated March 21, 1997, followed by the Decree of the Minister of Religious Affairs Number 290–323 of 1997, and further detailed through the Decree of the Directorate General of Islamic Institutional Development of the Ministry of Religious Affairs Number B/136/1997.

Based on Presidential Regulation Number 23 of 2018 dated April 5, 2018, signed by President Joko Widodo, STAIN Watampone was officially transformed into the State Islamic Institute of Bone (IAIN Bone). This presidential regulation was enacted on April 7, 2018 and recorded in the State Gazette of 2018 Number 46. The purpose of this institutional transformation is to strengthen, empower, and enlighten higher education institutions, particularly Islamic higher education, as an effort to anticipate the demands and changes of the global environment.

IAIN Bone is the only State Islamic Higher Education Institution in Bone Regency and is located in the capital city of Watampone.

1964 - Universitas Islam Raya Bone

The State Islamic Institute of Bone (IAIN Bone) started from Universitas Islam Raya Bone in 1964.

1967 - State University

The status was changed to a State University with the Faculty of Sharia of IAIN Alauddin Makassar in Watampone as a branch class of the Faculty of Sharia of IAIN Alauddin Makassar.

1968 - Branch Faculty of Sharia

It became the Branch Faculty of Sharia of IAIN Alauddin Makassar, offering the Sarjana Muda program.

1982 - Intermediate Faculty Branch

Its status changed to the Intermediate Faculty Branch of Alauddin Makassar, offering the Bachelor program.

1997 - STAIN Watampone

The Sharia Faculty Branch of IAIN Alauddin Ujung Pandang was transformed into STAIN Watampone based on the Decree of the President of the Republic of Indonesia No. 11 of 1997 and the Decree of the Minister of Religious Affairs of the Republic of Indonesia No. 290-323 of 1997.

2018 - STAIN Becomes IAIN Bone

Based on Presidential Regulation No. 23 of 2018 dated April 5, 2018, STAIN Watampone officially transformed into the State Islamic Institute (IAIN) Bone.

Scope of IAIN Bone

IAIN Bone has a scope for organizing Islamic higher education covering education, research, community service, institutional development, strategic partnerships, and the strengthening of religious moderation.

The State Islamic Institute (IAIN) Bone has a scope for organizing Islamic higher education covering education, research, community service, institutional development, strategic partnerships, and the strengthening of religious moderation. In the field of education, IAIN Bone is committed to providing high-quality digital-based learning to produce graduates who are religious, innovative, adaptive, and moderate. In the field of research, IAIN Bone acts as a center for strategic studies oriented towards knowledge development and solving socio-religious problems. Meanwhile, through community service, IAIN Bone actively implements empowerment and mentoring programs to support development based on Islamic values.

In institutional development, IAIN Bone applies professional, accountable, and sustainable higher education governance, while establishing strategic partnerships with various parties at local, national, and international levels to support the implementation of the "Merdeka Belajar – Kampus Merdeka" policy. Furthermore, IAIN Bone is at the forefront of strengthening religious moderation by instilling Islamic values of mercy to all, tolerance, and inclusivity. With the vision of becoming a humanistic and adaptive Islamic higher education institution, IAIN Bone is committed to being a center for education, research, and innovation in building a society that is religious, innovative, and moderate.
